The energy storage ecosystem is complex, and battery chemistry is both an art and a science. As a result, an extensive amount of research and testing goes into validating any new battery technology – from development in the lab through to larger-scale production – and what works in the lab does not automatically work on a larger scale. Many have tried, many have failed.
Dr.Elgammal adds, “Manufacturers must improve their lithium-ion battery technology to meet customer demand and needs. It is essential for electric vehicle drivers to be able to charge a lithium-ion battery in minutes, the same as cars with traditional internal combustion engines that take 5-minutes to fill-up at a gas station.”
Another critical part of the energy process that has to be taken into consideration is the existing infrastructure. Every day we hear about a new Gigafactory, or electrode manufacturing procedure being built to support the global demand for lithium-ion batteries.
